FOREWORD
“Survey on the effect of charcoal to tree growth and charcoal production in West
Kalimantan” is conducted by cooperation between Yayasan Dian Tama (YDT ) and
Demonstration Study on Carbon Fixing Forest Management in Indonesia of Japan
International Cooperation Agency ( JICA ) . The goals of survey are to see the prediction of charcoal giving for the plant growth in West Kalimantan and to gain the cost, yield and quality of charcoal production in Yoshimura kiln. Shorea macrophylla (Tengkawang tungkul) and Shorea leprosula (Meranti merah) have been planted for the survey with the charcoal which was made by Yoshimura kiln. The percentage of charcoal given into each planting hole is 0 %, 2.5 %, 5 % and 10 % on volume basis.

The contract between YDT-JICA continued from July 2002 to September 2004. The
activities reported are preparation of seeds, the preparation of the location, the making of charcoal, monitoring and socialization, data taking, caring and so on.
We have really hopes that all ideas and input constructively relate to this better survey in the future.

Finally we would like to say thank you to all of you whom kindly supported this research.
